Data Title: Sampling Survey on Migration
of 74 Cities and Towns in China 1986

Data Abstract
This survey, partly funded by UN Fund for Population Activities, was organized by
the Institute of Population Research, CASS, in collaboration with other 16 population
research institutions in China. Seventy-four cities and towns (15 super-sized, 6
large-sized, 12 medium-sized, 10 small-sized cities, and 31 towns) of 16 provinces,
autonomous regions and municipalities (Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Liaoning,
Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guandong, Sichuan, Guizhou,
Shaanxi and Ningxia) were selected. The survey started in July 1986 and completed
at the end of that year.
A total of 25,000 valid questionnaires were returned, which include 23,895 family-housholds
and 1,643 collective households, involving a total of 100,267 persons. The the questionnaire
addresse five aspects of population migration: (1) the size of population involved;
(2) urban migration and its orientions; (3) the structure of population migrating
and moving; (4) causes; and (5) consequences.
